Torrance’s Chloe Kim defends halfpipe Gold
Taking top honors once again in the women’s snowboard halfpipe event at this year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing was Torrance native Chloe Kim. On Wednesday, Kim laid down another Gold medal winning run, defending the title she first secured as a 17-year-old in Pyongyang.
This week, Kim became the first woman to win back-to-back Golds in snowboard halfpipe. It’s very cool, especially knowing that she’s a South Bay native. You go Chloe! In case you missed it, her Gold medal winning run is linked below.

Torrance Bakery puts dough on line
Here’s a cute Super Bowl story. The Torrance Bakery has challenged a well-loved family bakery in Cincinnati with a friendly wager over the big game. If the Rams win, Busken Bakery will donate $2,500 to the Torrance South Bay YMCA. And if the Bengals win, Torrance Bakery will donate $2,500 towards Seven Brothers Farm in Ohio.
Torrance Bakery is also selling football-themed cakes and cookies this week, the perfect treat for your Super Bowl parties. The bakery is located at 1341 El Prado Ave. For ordering call 310-320-2722 or visit TorranceBakery.com.
Best places to watch the Super Bowl
Even though the Super Bowl is taking place down the street at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, most of us will still be watching it on television. With tickets selling anywhere from $2,850 to $20,000, it doesn’t sound like I will be attending a Super Bowl anytime soon. That leaves us, as usual, with house parties and sports bars.
Here are my top three choices for places to watch the Super Bowl:
#1 Rock & Brews in Redondo Beach
Rock & Brews in Redondo Beach promises to have all the excitement you need. With some very large televisions, an extensive beer menu and a hearty wing special, this sports bar on PCH and Palos Verdes Boulevard should hit the spot.
#2 Pitcher House
The friendly atmosphere and laid back vibes at the Pitcher House continues to make it one of my all-time favorite local bars. Thinking back at the original location still makes me nostalgic and it’s nice they kept a lot of the old trinkets at the new location above the Whole Foods in Redondo Beach. This is a great place to catch the game and make new friends.
#3 Pedones in Hermosa Beach
Pedones Pizza in Hermosa Beach can be an overlooked establishment on Hermosa Avenue but it has all the requirements for excellent Super Bowl viewing including great hand-tossed pizza. There is pretty much a television screen plastered on every horizontal inch of the place. And chances are you can find a booth for your whole group without a reservation.
Skate parks set for approval in Redondo
Redondo Beach, which has been somewhat late to the skate park game, may soon have two places for kids to shred within its borders. The Harbor Commission is set to hear final plans for one skate park on the pier and another at Perry Park. If the plans are not appealed to the Coastal Commission, the Harbor Commission’s vote would be the last step with construction beginning in late May or early summer, according to the Easy Reader.
Plans to build at least one skate park in Redondo Beach have been ongoing with Spohn Ranch, the current designers, for at least five years now. So it’s nice to see the city finally moving forward. It is just incredible how slowly things work at City Hall. Maybe in our lifetimes we might have a revitalized harbor and a new sport fishing pier.
Lastly, it’s not too late to sign up for this year’s Super Bowl 10K. To sign up click here.
All for now. Thanks for reading.
Can’t leave Grunions off that list. Definitely one of the best sports bars in South Bay!
