King Harbor liveaboards vent frustrations
Earlier this month, Redondo Beach City Councilman Todd Loewenstein met with liveaboard boat owners in King Harbor Marina to discuss recent changes made by the new management company.
“We want to defend each of you,” Loewenstein said, based on a Fox11 segment. “That’s why we’re here.”
In November, after the marina issued 30-day eviction notices to its roughly 60 liveaboards, city officials were able to convince the owner, Dr. Allen Ginsburg and his Majestic KHM, to rescind the orders.
Now, the liveaboards say they are being charged for things they don’t use, such as pump out services, which some feel is a way of pressuring them to leave. Geoff Rendell said when he complained about the charges he was issued an eviction notice.
Loewenstein said the city will continue to do everything they can to allow liveaboards to stay, but there is not much they can do.
“Our legal team has looked it over,” Loewenstein told Fox11. “Our rights are limited but what we can do is advocate and we’re very concerned people will be left with nowhere to go.”
Increased energy bills no mistake
Representatives from Southern California Edison, SoCal Gas, Clean Power Alliance and California Public Utilities Commission all joined the Redondo Beach City Council this week to explain, basically, that higher energy bills were here to stay.
Those increased charges that people were noticing earlier this year, they said, were not a mistake. Generally higher usage in January combined with some billing changes meant that on average while usage increased 12% in January compared to the same month last year, bills went up by about 15%.
So nothing to see here I guess.
Comedy and Magic Club reopening
After being closed since March 2020, the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach will finally open its doors and shine its spotlight once again.
The Hermosa Beach Planning Commission recently granted owner Mike Lacey the 350 person capacity he said he needed to make up the club’s losses, according to the Easy Reader. Accommodating that many people will require a remodel, however.
The city had allowed the 43-year-old club to open with 250 people, but Lacey deemed it insufficient, so the club remained closed until now. It isn’t clear exactly when the club would actually open the doors, but Lacey said they would reopen before the remodel was finished.
Lost hiker, father of RUHS grad, found alive
The 73-year-old hiker found this week after two nights in the cold is the father of RUHS-graduate Mike Song, class of 1998. The family of Gab Song put messages on school alumni and hiking pages on Facebook earlier this week asking for clues into his disappearance.
Song went hiking at Mt. Pinos in Ventura County on Tuesday just as a snowstorm swept through the area. It’s not clear what tactics he used to survive two nights in the snow without proper gear, but maybe the full story will come out soon. What great relief for that family!
That’s all for now… thanks for reading.
