ICE deportations come to Torrance
Large scale immigration raids were conducted throughout Los Angeles County in recent weeks, rounding up undocumented immigrants including a father and son living in Torrance.
Rather than rounding up gang members and dangerous criminals, the ICE agents are targeting day laborers, construction workers, and even a father and 9-year-old son from Torrance, according to the Daily Breeze.
Martir Garcia Lara, who attended a Torrance elementary school, and his father, Martir Garcia-Banegas, were taken into custody during an immigration hearing on Thursday May 29. After a brief separation, they were promptly deported to Honduras, according to KTLA.
Their crime: entering the country illegally in 2021. This father and son did not commit any other crime other than trying to make a better life. But that’s America these days where immigrants are no longer welcomed.
No Kings protests scheduled for Saturday
This weekend, those opposed to the Trump administration will make their voices heard with peaceful protest at the No Kings Nationwide Day of Defiance taking place throughout the country. There are several options in the South Bay for peaceful demonstrations including Torrance, El Segundo and Playa Vista. Click here to find a location near you.
Parking enforcement back at Redondo Harbor
For a glorious few months while construction crews finished the California Surf Club and during Beach Life Festival, free parking was enjoyed by all at the Redondo Beach Harbor.
There was a noticeable increase in cars at the pier during this time, and I’m sure businesses felt an impact. But those days are over. Beginning this week, parking enforcement resumed with a vengeance.
Enforcement officers were out issuing $75 tickets on day one and even towing several cars. A week of warnings would have been nice, but I don’t make the rules. So, this is a heads up to make sure you pay for parking when visiting the Redondo Beach Pier.
A generation mourns passing of Brian Wilson
They were the soundtrack of a generation, and they came from right here in the South Bay. Brian Wilson, lead singer of the Beach Boys, died this week, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, love and brilliance.
All five of the group attended Hawthorne High School, and played throughout the South Bay in their early days. They will forever be remembered for their good vibrations, who spread beauty and love in five-part harmony.
Adopt-a-pet from LA animal shelter
From Pet Sounds to Adopt-a-Pet… Last Saturday was the second annual adopt-a-pet day where LA Animal Services waived adoption fees. Even though I missed the announcement, it’s never a bad time to adopt a pet, and the fees are not that high. Just $100 for a large dog. There are so many cute dogs waiting for a new home. If you’re looking for a new pet, please consider rescuing one of these loving animals. Visit LAAnimalServices.com for more.
