Largest protest in Torrance history
As part of “No Kings Day” protests last Saturday against Donald Trump and his immigration enforcement goon squads, Torrance saw the largest political protest in the city’s history.
More than 3,000 people lined the streets before the demonstration was even set to begin. If there’s one thing that’s clear: Torrance is willing to stand up for the rights of our immigrant brothers and sisters. This is a compassionate community — unlike the federal government at the current moment — which I’m proud to be a part of.
Palos Verdes police ID human remains
Six months have passed since a series of grizzly discoveries on the beaches of Palos Verdes. Over the course of several weeks last winter, at least two sets of human remains were found on the beach. There was a skull and a femur bone in one discovery that was severely decomposed. Rumors swirled. Narratives were written. I was even thinking of a novel based on the mystery.
Well, after so many long months of waiting, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department said this week that it had identified the remains as three separate missing people. What were the chances of that?
The bones were identified as a Redondo Beach boater, a homeless man and a fisherman who went missing after his boat was discovered crashed on the beach, according to CBS News. One set of remains was actually found in 2023.
Skechers opens mega store
Skechers earlier this month opened a super store in Torrance, according to the Daily Breeze. This will reinvigorate my endless challenge to find a pair of Skechers shoes that actually look stylish. I’ve tried and tried. I want to support our local brand. I really do. But we need to have a word with their designers… I’ll try again. Maybe I’ll find something that doesn’t look orthopedic. Wish me luck.
Historical waterfront tour this Sunday
This Sunday I will be kicking off a series of historical waterfront walking tours. I wrote and produced a self-guided audio tour that is currently available for purchase through VoiceMap. Turns out, there was more interest in a live tour, so I started doing them last summer in person.
The tour begins 9 a.m. Sunday June 22 at Moonstone Park in King Harbor Marina and ends about 90 minutes later at Veterans Park. We cover the period mostly from 1888 to the 1920s, with some more ancient and modern history along the way. It’s been my pleasure to share our rich history of Redondo Beach. Please join me this Sunday. Donation $10 please.
If you plan on attending please RSVP through this Facebook event or comment on this post. To catch more upcoming tours please like or follow my Facebook page, Historical Redondo.
All for now. Thanks for reading. Hope to see you Sunday.
