California Surf Club opens
This week I had the pleasure of dining at the new California Surf Club North Grill, which is the public restaurant located where Ruby’s used to be. The place is super clean and modern with a retro beach vibe. The restaurant feels comfortable and nostalgic and a place you want to spend time especially on the patio on a warm day.
To the south is the private side of the club, which requires a membership. The north side is completely open to the public. The menu is varied with seafood and smoked meat options, along with a raw oyster bar with selections from as far away as Japan. For reservations visit CASurfClub.com.
Vin Folk in Hermosa added to CA Michelin Guide
Among the elite restaurants added to the California Michelin Guide this year was Vin Folk in Hermosa Beach. Located at 1501 Hermosa Avenue on the west side of the street where Chef Melba’s Bistro used to be, the restaurant quietly opened last November. Since then it’s been making waves among culinary circles for its French-leaning cuisine that pulls from so many different flavors around the world. For reservations visit Vin-Folk.com.

Gas restored to parts of Palos Verdes
In Rancho Palos Verdes, 38 homes in the Seaview neighborhood were reconnected to gas service this week, according to the Daily Breeze. SoCal Gas cut off service in the area starting in August 2024. It’s a small step in restoring gas to the dozens of homes affected by land movement that accelerated in July 2024 but since October has largely subsided. More than 130 homes are still without gas services in the Portuguese Bend area since last July.

While you are here, I want to introduce you to my other writing projects I recently launched. They are Substacks, like this one, in which you can also subscribe. One is called Random Roses for creative nonfiction where I write about past travel stories, recent experiences and whatever else. The other is called Unwanted Political Advice where I write a political opinion column. If you are interested in any of these topics, please follow the links in this paragraph and subscribe. Thank you very much!
Budget scrutiny in LA
Lastly, I wanted to call your attention to a speech last week by Los Angeles Councilwoman Traci Park on the city’s budget, which passed by a 12-3 vote. Park and two others were opposed. This is what being a representative of the people is all about.
“This budget doesn’t reflect our promises,” she said during the fiery speech that was heralded across social media. “It’s bloated with homeless spending — a bottomless pit, a taxpayer boondoggle that doubles down on failure year after year. And frankly, at this point, it’s just embarrassing. Hundreds of millions of dollars...and no one can even tell us...how many beds we have.”
You go Traci. As I discussed a few weeks ago in Unwanted Political Advice, LAHSA faces a federal investigation and its officials could be looking soon at serious charges.
Thanks for reading, and see you next week.
